Google Jagger Update Dated: - 16th Oct 2005 - 18th Nov 2005

Google once again changed its algorithms in the winter of 2005 and named it the Google Jagger Update. This was another update in line with all the other updates to fight spam and discourage unethical practices. After the Florida Update, many within the SEO industry considered this update disastrous as it completely re-hauled the methods used by search marketers and optimizers to increase rankings of websites.

Like its predecessor the Bourbon Update, the Jagger update was also introduced in three phases.  The Phase one was reporting and penalizing of spam which was collected and indexed at http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html. Strict action was taken against any website found guilty of spam. Google increased data centers to store and index web pages.

With the introduction of the Jagger Update to put an end to excessive reciprocal linking which was without relevancy. Authoritative sites were given prominence with the introduction of this update. Many webmasters state that this update dealt with the canonical issues related to websites. Another feature that Google believed was being misused was the Blogs on the Internet which became content sites managed with the purpose to gain rankings on keywords or keyphrases. These Blogs contained link spam and were not relevant to the results of SERPs.

Reasons
The following are the reasons that led Google to launch the Jagger Update:
1. To deal with manipulative link-network schemes
2. Allow for a greater inclusion of different types of documents and file types
3. Allow and account for new methods of site acquisition beyond the use of the Spider Googlebot

Ramifications
The ramifications of any new Google update had by this time become predictable. Several websites which enjoyed good rankings disappeared from the Google SERPs. The conclusion within the SEO and Internet Marketing industry was that the link schemes that was practiced by thousands of websites were the most affected by the introduction of the Google Jagger Update.
(a) Lots of websites have link wires get the penalty
(b) Site doing non-relevant reciprocal linking

Reactions
Many SEO and Internet marketers were shocked to see website rankings plummet. Many reacted angrily with some even predicting that the ever changing nature of results on Google would encourage information seekers to move to Yahoo and MSN. However, all this turned to be just angry talk as Google continues to the Numero Uno of the search engines. The SEO industry survives and thrives by manipulating the algorithms in use by Google. Google on its part, introduces updates such as the Jagger update to fight spammers and undue influence of the SEO industry on the search engine rankings.
